This is the first post of this blog. Most of the posts here will be about technical or transformational matters but from time to time this will be about the company or other meta topics.
The most meta thing that can be written about this blog is how the blog is made. I could have went for something like Wordpress or Medium but I wanted this to easily scale and be able to be versioned. This is why I went for a static site generator. I also wanted something that was secure and so I used Zola. I did seriously consider Hugo but with so many tools moving over to Rust and security being so important I went with Zola. The hosting is being provided for free by Cloudflare Pages and the domain is being provided by Blacknight.
UnicornOps is still in founding mode so the business is just getting started. This is my first business in Ireland and while I could have founded the company myself I decided to do things on easy mode and have Icon Accounting do the work for me. They are a great company and I would recommend them to anyone looking to start a business in Ireland. They have been a pleasure to work with and came highly recommended from someone trusted.
Founding a company in the days of AI is much easier than it used to be. Simple things like generating content can be done with OpenAI and other text tools. I have been using LM Studio a lot recently for local use and I have used Draw Things for the first version of this logo. The text on this blog is being helped with CoPilot and I am using GitHub to host this blog. What I love most about this is how it has seriously lowered the barrier to entry for anyone looking to start their own business in any field. Everything from writing business cases and funding requests to client pitches can be supported by AI allowing experts to focus on the value they can provide and not the boilerplate.
The company name comes from an old blog I started at the start of the last company I worked for. While the blog never continued the name has stuck with me and I have decided to continue to use it for this new venture. The Unicorn being the national animal of Scotland has always captured my imagination being from Scotland and the Ops part is a nod to the DevOps culture that I have been a part of for since the beginning of DevOps.
I am looking forward to writing more posts and sharing more about the journey of UnicornOps. I hope you enjoy the content and if you have any feedback please let me know. I am always looking to improve and make this blog better for you.
